Sperm disorders

Half the times conception does not occur because of male infertility. Diseases that cause male infertility are asymptomatic and are manifested only in the inability to conceive. If no pregnancy occurs after one year of active sex life without contraception, the couple should undergo an examination. It is advisable for the male to be examined first. In most cases, male infertility tests are simpler, cheaper, and require less invasive procedures.

How can sperm disorders be diagnosed?

To find out what kind of sperm disorders are at work, the male partner has to provide a sperm sample (after three to five days of abstinence). A normal sperm count is 20 million spermatozoa per millimetre of seminal fluid, of which half are motile. 5 million spermatozoa should be free from pathology. On in this case sperm is considered capable of insemination.

What examinations are required in case of bad spermiogram results?

Diagnosing male infertility requires examining the composition of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in order to determine the treatment tactic. It also requires:

  • testing the male partner for any infection
  • performing an ultrasonic examination of the scrotum to detect any disorders that may obstruct the passage of spermatozoa
  • performing genetic screening to determine the qualitative and quantitative indicators of chromosomes
  • performing DNA diagnostic of the Y chromosome
  • DNA screening for the cystic fibrosis gene (cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease that affects tissues that produce mucus secretions).
